Rosen Method began in 1972 when Sara Webb approached Marion Rosen, a professional Physical Therapist, and asked her to teach what she knew about the mind/body connection and her method of helping people heal physical and emotional pain. Marion at first declined. She didn't think her style of work, developed through many years of hands-on experience, could be transmitted to anyone. A day or two later Marion called Sara back and said she was willing to try teaching her, though she still didn't know whether it was possible to teach this subtle and unique style of bodywork. At that point Marion Rosen began her vocation as a teacher. Students soon flocked to her from around the Bay Area. The first training program was established in Berkeley in 1980, and included Marion's niece Marion Mehr, who was visiting from Sweden. Shortly thereafter, a training program was founded in Sweden under the auspices of Hans Axelson, founder of Axelsons Gymnastiska, a bodywork institute in Scandinavia. Rosen Method quickly expanded to many other European countries. Since that time, eleven more Rosen Method centers have been established worldwide, in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Australia and Russia. Today, many hundreds of practitioners and movement teachers have been trained and are practicing successfully. Rosen Method: the Berkeley Center opened its current facilities in west Berkeley in 1993. The directors of the Center are Marion Rosen, Founder; Sara Webb, Executive Director and Gloria Hessellund, Director of Teaching. The Teaching Room at 825 Bancroft Way is a large, well-lighted space with high ceilings and exposed beams that opens onto a garden patio. This is the space where classes are held, both movement and bodywork. The administrative offices are located around the corner at 2236 Sixth Street, where the school director and office manager are available to talk to prospective students about the Rosen Method training programs. Office hours are 10:00AM to 4:00PM, Tuesday through Friday. Open Houses are held twice a year and tours of the facility may be arranged individually.
